Sound Observations

  • Madonna's film clip for Get Together looks like a Winamp visualization.
  • Nelly Furtado's Promiscuous is so ordinary, it could have been done by any one of the BEP wannabes. I'd rather she'd just released Man Eater worldwide, though you've got to appreciate the effort of releasing three different tracks for different markets. No wonder she was reduced to silly little giggles on Rove the other night...
  • I prefer tone396's version of Lily Allen's Smile better than the official release version.  It's such a cute song, though.
  • They had a report on Ten (?) last night about there being too many sexy music videos like Pussycat Dolls' Buttons but, to illustrate their point, they included a clip of The Aphex Twin's Windowlicker which was was strange choice to make and in any case they should have shown the part where the women all start to morph into the Twin himself.  Hot.

A random on-the-spot list of hot songs of the moment:

  • Mary J Blige and U2 - One
  • Lily Allen - Smile (tone396)
  • Beyonce ft Jay-Z - Déjà Vu
  • Scissor Sisters - Don't Feel Like Dancing
  • Londonbeat vs Moby - Thinking About Lifting You (DJ Tripp mashup) (though I have to say that Moby's vocals really shit me; it's not uplifting, it's a dirge. I do like the beats, though, and thank god Londonbeat come back to pick it all up again...)

Come to daddy!

Windowlicker ?!? God, what an odd choice! Which bit did they use? (They couldn't possibly play the 'niggaz' intro, LOL!) (I do like the Twin's bouncy umbrella dance break.)

Have you seen the video for Come to Daddy -- also directed by Chris Cunningham? It's one of the most horrifying I've seen. Horrifying, but still kinda funny.

My favourite recent (well, not really recent) clips are Deep Dish/Stevie Nicks Dreams and The Knife's Pass This On. Great little films.

Hey, your Ballarat and Hobart pics are amazing. Did you use a star filter in the latest stage pics or is that just natural flare?

Cheers,

C

Not so odd, really. They

Not so odd, really. They used the slo-mo part where all you see are big bouncing booty all lined up. Odd choice because methinks Ten missed the point of the filmclip...

Oh I do love good filmclips. Come to Daddy is pretty freaky, though, and I do like Cunningham's work and his DVD in the "Works of Director" series. Michel Gondry's is my absolute favourite though.

Haven't seen anything new lately that I like, really behind the times at the moment, haven't even seen your collection yet. Thank God for YouTube!

And as for the stage pics: No filters, just a case of haphazard adjusting of the manual settings! When you spontaneously make the decision to take some side-stage piccies, as in the case of the *star* pictures, there's no time for anything deliberate.

Jhun-Buggles (sorry)... or, how video made a few radio stars

Yeah, I love those sets, the Gondry and Cunningham more than the Jonze. I haven't watched them since they came out -- maybe two years ago.

Ta for the link. Your post reminded me of Russian dolls inside other Russian dolls -- Bjork's 'Bachelorette' -- and the other amazing Gondry stuff.

I adore Chris Cunningham's clip of another Bjork song: 'All is full of love'... all that robotic soft porn and viscous engine oil! (LOL) I first saw it in a gallery in Melbourne. Second time was at Queensland Art Gallery. How pretentious!!! :)

Would like to see more Mark Romanek clips. He did NIN's 'Closer'. But the one that started it all, I reckon, and still stands up 20 years on, is a video of a Cabaret Voltaire song Sensoria. Peter Care did it, I think.

Like Bjork, Marilyn Manson uses some mighty fine filmmakers.

blaspheme

I find your comment re: Promiscuous totally blasphemous! I have been loving that song since I saw you in Darwin! Okay, I'm a bit sick of it now, but I love Nelly and I think it's a great song. Ah, Nelly. She can do no wrong in my eyes.

Although, I do think this CD will be a lot less enduring than her other two. It's good that she's popular again though.

Well it sounds great. And I

Well it sounds great. And I would probably dance to it if I heard it out. And good on her for give it a go. But to me it still sounds like a blatant and overly obvious attempt to become popular again. And even more so, what with the multiple releases to promote her new stuff.
